Wafer manufacturing hopeful CubicPV launched that its Board of Directors has decided to halt the company’s U.S. wafer manufacturing plans and focus as an alternative on tandem module progress.
The company blamed market dynamics, along with a collapse in wafer pricing and a surge in improvement costs, as the reason behind its thwarted strive at realizing dwelling manufacturing.
CubicPV first launched its intentions in 2022 to open a 10-GW wafer manufacturing unit in America. The company, which moreover has evaluation experience in tandem silicon-perovskites designs, championed a “direct wafer” experience that can make wafers straight from molten silicon.
As a substitute for working with that novel technique, CubicPV acknowledged the U.S. manufacturing unit would start with making standard mono-wafers from ingots. Now the company is abandoning wafers altogether.
With the Board’s decision to restructure the company, CubicPV will even cut back its workforce and do away with positions tied to the U.S. manufacturing unit effort. Frank van Mierlo will step down as CEO following a 16-year tenure at CubicPV’s helm, and Tim McCaffery, World Funding Director at SCG, will assume CEO duties until an alternate is found.
