Solar Bitcoin Mining

Solar Bitcoin Mining

As per Investopedia According to Investopedia at the time of writing the number was around 18.77 million Bitcoins had been extracted across the globe. This is an enormous amount of Bitcoins, and, with it, even more energy. In actual fact, Bitcoin mining uses around 91 terawatts of electricity per year. That’s over a third of the power consumed by cooling homes across the U.S. annually.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Bitcoin mining can have negative impacts on our environment. In fact, Elon Musk himself has announced via Twitter: “We are concerned about the rapidly growing use of fossil fuels in Bitcoin mining”. Since then, many have wondered if solar-powered Bitcoin mining is an alternative to conventional mining, which relies on grid power to generate electricity.

The amount of solar panels required to make Bitcoin is between 30 and 50 panels, but it all depends on the location you live in and the amount of electricity your mining equipment consumes. The majority of professional mining equipment draws around 3000 watts and consumes an average of 72 kWh per day.

In this article, we hope to explain how solar-powered bitcoin mining operates in order to help you harness solar energy to offset your carbon emissions and save money on expenses.

How much energy will it take to mine one bitcoin every day?

Solar Bitcoin Mining

According to the Digiconomist’s Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index, it requires 1,444 kWh to make a bitcoin transaction. This is quite a lot of energy. If we assume the cost average of US energy, which is 13.3 cents per kWh, the energy cost needed to create 1 bitcoin is:

1544kWh * $0.13 equals $200.72

At first glance, $13.9 cents may not seem like a lot. And this is true, but it’s contingent on the amount of kWh you use. I can guarantee you immediately that none of the Bitcoin mining devices on the planet can run on this tiny amount of power.

For instance, Bitcoin mining rigs like the Bitmain Antminer are well-known for consuming a significant amount of power!

How much electricity does Bitcoin Mining Make Use of?

Bitcoin Mining

This is completely dependent on the mining equipment. Below, we have put together an information table to check out the different power ratings of different mining equipment.

Bitcoin Mining Rig

Wattage Draw

3250

3000

1200

The majority of crypto miners do not leave their machines to mine all day. With this in mind, let’s figure out the number of kWh of power that the Antminer S19 would use in the course of a single morning of mine. Finding out the amount of energy (Wh/kWh) the appliance consumes by analyzing its wattage can be done easily. Simply multiply the power rating of your appliance (in this instance, 3000 Watts) by the amount of time you are planning to use it.

We want to achieve an ROI as soon as possible, so we plan to let our machine mine all day long.

3000 watts x 24 hours = 72,000 Wh or 72 kWh

To provide you with more insight into the amount of electricity being used, let’s take examine the typical daily usage of electricity for the typical U.S. household. It is approximately 28,5 kWh. The process of mining bitcoin for 24 hours using the Antminer S19 would use two and one-half times more energy than the entire household in one day! That’s a lot of energy that you can offset using the solar power of your bitcoin mining device.

How many Solar Panels are required for Bitcoin Mining?

Solar Bitcoin Mining

Mining bitcoin using solar energy is certainly feasible, though expensive. The number of solar panels that you require is contingent on the location in which you reside, as well as how much power your Bitcoin mining machine consumes. We’ve established the type of wattage of the most powerful mining rigs the next step is to determine the amount of sunshine (peak sunshine hours) your region receives to figure out the number of solar panels you’ll require.

Use the Global Solar Atlas to figure it out for yourself, if your country is not included in our databases as of yet. Use the map with the words Global Horizontal Irradiation (GHI). Then, determine how many hours of sun during peak times your region receives, and then write the number down on a sheet of paper someplace.

If you live in a place that is believed as being a little overcast (no one is pointing fingers at England) We would suggest against considering bitcoin mining rigs powered by solar energy.

More details to come on that later.

This formula can be used to calculate the number of solar panels you’ll need to build a bitcoin mining rig.

(Monthly Electric Usage / Monthly Peak Sun Hours) x 1000

Let’s set an example to help you. Imagine you’re within the United States, in California.

California is home to an average of 5.2 peak sun hours per day. To calculate this, we need to know our region’s maximum sun hours for the month and not daily. multiply your results by 30 (amount of days within a month).

5.2 3 = 156 peak sunlight times in California.

Let’s now divide the monthly consumption of electricity by your most sunlit hours. We know that the Antminer S19 draws 3000 watts If you were to use it for 24 hours, it would require 7,220 Wh (72 kWh) per day. To calculate the monthly consumption we divide the 31-day period.

72 times 30 equals 2,160 kWh for a month.

Now, you can apply the formula you have just used.

2,160 / 156 = 13,84

1384 x 1,000 = 13.846 Watts.

Now, you need to determine the number of solar panels you’ll require. To do this, you must divide the above figure by the solar panel’s proposed rating. Most solar systems for residential use install 400-watt solar panels, therefore we suggest using this power rating when setting up your Bitcoin mining configuration.

13,846 x 400 = 34,6 panels (round it off by 35)

To be able in order to counteract the power consumed to mine Bitcoin it is necessary to put 35 solar panel panels to your rooftop. All of them generate around 13,846 watts of energy.

That is it is necessary to have a solar system of 14kW for mining bitcoin using solar power.

13,846 watts divided by 1,000 = 13,84kW
Round off to 14kW

This example assumes that you reside in California. Let’s try another one where you assume you are within London, England.

2.8 x 30 days = 84 peak hours of sun

2,160 / 84 = 25,71

25,71 x 1000 = 25,710 watts

25,710 / 400 = 64,27 solar panels are needed

As you may have guessed that this is not feasible. If you don’t have a huge quantity of land and aren’t concerned about the high costs of solar panels the solar power option for Bitcoin mining in London isn’t feasible due to the absence of sunlight.

What is the cost of a solar Powered Bitcoin Mining Machine cost me?

Solar Bitcoin Mining

It is worth noting that the Bitcoin mining device itself differs significantly in price. You can expect to pay between $1000 and $10,000 for the mining rig. Solar panel costs also depend on the size you choose to install as well as the location in which you live. For the U.S. for example these are the typical prices you can expect to pay in solar power:

The estimated price of a solar-powered bitcoin mining set-up

The cost is contingent on the type of mining equipment you have and how many you intend to utilize and the number of sunlight hours during the peak times your region gets. If you lived in California and utilize Antminer S19, the Antminer S19, you would require a solar array of 15kW to supply enough power to offset the bitcoin mining rig’s electric consumption. Based on the table above, we can observe that a solar system with 15kW is on average costing $31,191 after tax incentives.

$31,191 + $8,500 = $39,691 for a solar-powered bitcoin mining rig

The solar system is the most expensive however, keep in mind the amount you’d be spending on electricity if it weren’t for these solar panels. If you use Antminer S19. Antminer S19 you would be spending about $290 per month for electricity. (This considers into account the U.S. average electricity costs into consideration, but some states are more expensive than other states.)

$0,13 x 2,232 = $290

How long would solar-powered bitcoin mining take to pay for itself?

Solar Bitcoin Mining

If you live in California and use the Antminer S19, it would take 8,9 years for your solar panels to pay for themselves.

This does not include the savings from no electricity consumption. Profits from actual Bitcoin mining could be used as an additional boost to this process.

Pros & Cons Of Solar-powered Crypto Mining

Pros
  • The power required to run your mining business is free after you’ve set up solar panels. You don’t need to pay for electricity for many years to come, since the latest solar panels are built to last for many decades..
  • The most significant cost of solar-powered crypto mining is the initial cost of setting up. There aren’t a lot or no ongoing expenses. This results in an ongoing source of passive earnings which can grow over time.
  • However, using conventional sources of energy for bitcoin mining can have negative effects on the environment as mining itself is intensive in terms of energy use. The conventional energy source is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and also causes numerous other environmental issues. Mining bitcoin using solar power is an eco-friendly, green solution.
  • There are many reasons why the power grid can experience interruptions. Solar power isn’t immune to the majority of these! After your system has been installed solar power is the most reliable, robust form of energy when the system is set up.
  • If you’re looking to be independent and self-sufficient, solar power provides an energy source that is reliable and is exclusively yours.
Cons
  • The biggest drawback to the solar power of crypto-mining is that it comes with significant upfront costs. It’s widely recognized that grids are inexpensive to get started with since you pay only for the energy, not the infrastructure required to manage it.
  • There are also concerns about the amount of electricity generated through solar panels. An extended period of poor weather, like a bad winter, will significantly lower how much solar energy your panels generate.
  • You’ll need to stay committed to mining bitcoins for several years before you can recover the cost of your initial investment due to the cost of purchasing from solar power infrastructure. Additionally, you’ll need be mining at a vast scale to be able to recover the costs.
  • The area you can use for solar panels in your home also limits how much solar energy you produce. It may be difficult to build enough solar panels to power your bitcoin business, based on your personal circumstances.

Key Takeaways

Takeaways

The quantity of solar panels that are used in the mining systems is essential to the overall project. A solar panel is susceptible to cloud cover and therefore the most suitable location for mining is in the desert, where every square meter in panels is utilized to produce as much power as it is possible.

A location like West Texas is ideal for this kind of power Bitcoin mining. Bitcoin miners that use fossil fuels to power their machines like the grid that powers the purpose of a cryptocurrency mining machine may gain from using any form of solar panel in adequate amounts.

A solar farm must have a large battery system in order to make sure that the energy generated from the sq meters of the solar panel could be stored in the event that the sun isn’t shining. A battery with a capacity of 500-600AH bank will provide enough to power a home for this function.

Things to Consider When Buying Solar Christmas Lights

Durability

A variety of Christmas lights are made from plastic. If you’re looking for lights to last just one season you can do that however, if you want something that will last, you should look for an item that features solar panels that are protected by glass that has been tempered. They’re guaranteed to last longer, especially if they install them outdoors.

Replaceable Lights

Even the most efficient solar Christmas lights come with some service life, which is why you need to choose a model that allows you to replace each bulb easily. If you purchase a lighting kit that isn’t able to do to replace the bulbs, you’ll need to search for an additional one every season.

Sunlight Requirements

Most solar LED lights need 8 hours of sunshine per day to function properly even after darkness. Some can recharge and store sufficient solar energy even in the midst of cloudy. You should know how much sun your backyard is exposed to on a normal day prior to choosing solar-powered Christmas lights.

Price

It is something you can easily check in your web browser. Knowing the price will allow you to avoid items that don’t fit your budget. There are more expensive and affordable alternatives However, when you are evaluating the price, it is important to take into account other aspects like warranty and kind of battery, user reviews, etc.

Warranty

A longer warranty doesn’t only indicate that you’re purchasing a high-quality product, but also provides your peace of mind knowing that you’re protected in the event that something occurs. When you compare warranties, it is important to know that money back is just one factor, and an exchange warranty is the alternative.

Weatherproofing

It is a crucial aspect to consider, particularly for those who plan to put the Christmas lights outdoors. Light kits that have IP65 protection must be capable of handling snow, dust and heavy rain. However, be sure to go through product reviews, since the manufacturer’s advertisements are not always authentic regarding the waterproofing.

Easy Installation

Make sure that the traditional Christmas lights you purchase include a installation guide. Choose lights that are easy to set up and stay clear of lights that can get stuck easily. Certain lights come with flexible copper cables that allow the user to create various designs.

Quality and Performance

The best solar LED lights are energy efficient and consume less energy and after charging, they will last at minimum 8 hours. You also want an item that’s going last for a few festive seasons at a minimum. Otherwise, you’ll be forced to manage electronic waste each time you take them off.

Solar Panel Type

Apart from selecting an option with a solar panel that is secured by glass that is tempered, you have be aware of the kind of solar panel too. From polycrystalline solar panels to Amorphous Silicon, monocrystalline panels or concentrated PV solar cells you need to keep in the mind that monocrystalline PV and concentrated PV offer the highest performance and have a longer lifespan.

Automated Setting

The majority of solar-powered lights come with the ability to detect daylight for automated switch-on and off modes. However, a lot of them do not have a manual switch. Since these lights are equipped with multiple different modes of operation, try to find the ones that will remember your previous setting, so that you won’t need to change them each time.

The time for charging and battery life

Another aspect to think about is the time it takes to charge the lights under direct sunlight. In the majority of cases you can leave the light on outdoors all day long is sufficient for any string of lights. However, studies show that in actual use, there are a few products that do not match the claims of the manufacturers.

String Length & Number Of Lights

The ability to have a longer string is an excellent thing but you have take into consideration the size and placement of the bulbs. A majority of string lights are sold in only one string configuration however some come with multiple strings, which allows you to create an “cascade result”.

Functions

Some lights come with an automatic on/off options, other lights come with advanced settings such as fade or chase as well as any of the other. If you are planning to put these lights to a surface that is difficult to reach, consider ones with a remote.

A Complete Guide To 2022’s Solar Tax Credit For The Federal Government

Solar Tax Credit For The Federal Government

A Complete Guide To 2022’s Solar Tax Credit For The Federal Government

Federal solar tax credits, which are now known as “The Clean Energy Credit”, are the largest solar incentive currently available. This tax incentive will cover 30 percent of the costs of installing solar panels which can provide the homeowner with thousands in savings on the tax bill. In certain cases, it is possible to completely reduce your tax bill!

The majority of Americans can benefit from this tax incentive for solar however there are some important things you should be aware of about the process to determine what is eligible and who can make use of it prior to making the change to solar.

The solar tax credit for the federal government in an enumeration:

  • Solar panels installed prior to 2033 can qualify for tax credits equal to 30% of the total cost to install solar panels.
  • A solar panel costing $20,000 would be eligible for tax credits equal to $6,000 of the amount you owe on federal income tax.
  • The solar systems that are installed by 2033 will be eligible for an additional tax credit of 26 and systems that are installed in 2034 will receive an additional 22% tax credit prior to when the tax credit expires completely in 2035.
  • To be eligible for tax credits, you must have solar panels, earn an income tax-deductible and the solar panels must be placed on your primary or second residence.
  • Battery storage systems also are eligible for the federal tax credit of 30% credit if they are charged exclusively using solar energy. In 2023, battery installations that are standalone will also be eligible for tax credits.

Solar Tax Credit For The Federal Government

What is the Federal Solar Tax Credit? functions

Before we go to the tax credits for solar energy in particular first, let’s review the fundamentals of how tax credits work. If you have a debt of $3,000 in federal taxes, but qualify for a tax credit worth 1,000, the tax obligation is reduced to $2,000. It’s pretty simple.

Solar tax credits operate similarly to the tax credit for solar panels. The amount of tax credit you get is determined by the proportion of “qualifying costs” of installing solar panels. In 2022 The solar tax credit amounts to 30 percent of the installation cost. So, if your solar panel installation costs you $20k and you qualify to receive the tax deduction of $6,000.

Solar panels installed in 2033 will be eligible for an amount of tax credit equivalent to up to 26 percent of the installation costs. In 2034 this tax credit is expected to amount to 22 percent. In 2035 the solar tax credit for federal taxpayers will be completely canceled.

So a solar system that was installed in 2022 will receive the credit amount of $6,000, whereas systems installed at the same amount in 2033 will only get $5,200.

What if I owe more than the tax credit amount?

Solar tax credits are not refundable which means that when the solar tax credit you receive is greater than the amount you owe in tax you won’t receive any kind of payment or refund. But that doesn’t mean you can’t receive the full amount. Any remaining value is carried forward and added to your tax bill in the following year.

Let’s say that your solar system is installed, and you receive a tax credit of $6,000 however, there’s only $4,000 of federal tax on income. This leaves you with a tax credit of $2,000 which will be used for the next tax year. Tax credits can be carried over for up to five years.

What should I do if I’m receiving an income tax refund?

Also, there’s the possibility that your taxes were withheld from your paycheck and you’ve already paid taxes. In certain instances, there could be a lot that has been taken from your pay, and the federal government is owed an amount of money.

If that’s the situation then the solar tax credit for federal taxpayers can be added to the tax refund check. But only that is equal to the amount you owe. If you owe $8,000 in taxes, and $10,000 was removed from your paycheck then you’d receive a tax refund of $2,000 from the federal government.

If in the same year you had installed solar and were awarded a $9,000 tax credit, you’d receive an additional $8,000 on the refund check, for an overall tax refund of $10,000. The remainder of the tax credit would carry forward into the following year.

Solar Tax Credit For The Federal Government

How can you be eligible for the federal 30% solar tax credit

As we mentioned earlier, the majority of Americans are eligible to receive the tax credits offered by Congress. However, there are certain situations where you may not be qualified. The eligibility criteria are in the following order:

  • The system is required to be installed between 2022 and 2032.
  • You have to be the owner of the system that is powered by solar panels.
  • You must earn a tax-deductible income.
  • The solar panel must be installed at the primary or secondary residence.
  • It is required to be claimed in the original installation for the undertaking.
Ownership of your solar system: If you go solar with the option of a solar lease or a solar PPA and you do not qualify for an exemption from the solar tax credits as you're not the owner of your solar installation. If you buy solar with a solar loan you are still able to benefit from the tax credit as you own the solar system.

What are the costs that are eligible to receive Federal solar credits?

The majority, if not all, of the expenses related to installing solar panels can be claimed to be covered under Federal solar tax credits. Costs that qualify are:

  • equipment: Cost of solar panel and racking, as well as wiring and inverters.
  • Labor for contractors: The cost of the labor involved in preparation, installation, and planning and the cost of permits costs and inspections.
  • Taxes on sales: Any sales tax that is a result of the above costs is paid with the tax credit.

Technically speaking, the tax credit isn’t limited to solar panels. Other clean energy systems may also benefit from the tax credit which includes electric water heaters and thermal fuel cells, geothermal heat pumps,s and even tiny wind power systems!

Do our battery storage systems qualify for the Federal solar tax credit?

Yes, Energy storage will be eligible for the tax of 30% credit. Thanks to the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act, battery systems that pair with solar panels by 2022 will receive the full 30% tax credit.

On average, batteries for residential use are priced between $10,000 to $15,000 to install. Therefore, you should expect tax credits of $3000 and $4500 for energy storage. When the batteries are fitted by solar, the cost of the battery will be included in the other solar installation expenses. If a battery that is standalone is installed without solar panels, you’ll be eligible for tax credits depending on the cost of battery installation.

Beginning in 2023, standalone batteries with no solar power will be eligible to avail of the tax credits offered by federal law. Batteries installed after 2023 should be at a minimum of three kilowatts (kWh) to be considered large. The majority of home storage batteries are about 10 kWh and therefore you won’t need to think about the minimum power requirements.

How does the solar tax credit work with state, local, and utility incentives?

The federal tax credit isn’t the only incentive available to homeowners who switch to solar. You could be eligible for other incentives offered by your state government, or even your utility company. The type of incentive could potentially impact how much your federal solar tax credit will be worth.

The utility incentive

In the majority of cases If you’re receiving the benefit of a rebate from your utility company the amount of the utility refund will subtract from the total expenses prior to your federal tax credits being determined. This reduces the number of tax credits you receive.

This is an example: You install a solar system at $20,000. You receive an amount of $1,000 through your energy provider. In lieu of tax credits based on the initial price of $20,000 however, it will instead be calculated based on the cost after deducting the rebate from your utility company. In this case, it’s $19,000.

The following formula to determine the value of your tax credit is worth following an incentive to use the utility:

30% x (Total system cost – Utility rebate amount) = Federal tax credit value

Tax credits and incentives from the state

In contrast to utility incentives, government incentives from state governments typically do not require deduction prior to that federal tax credit can be determined.

If you had a $20,000 system and received a $1000 state government rebate and a solar tax credit will be calculated based on the initial cost of $20,000. In this instance, this means the tax credit will be equal to 30% of the $20,000, which is an amount of federal tax credit that is $6,000. This means you’d receive a total of $7,700 in incentives.

The same goes for the tax incentive programs offered by states. However, receiving the state tax credit could increase your tax-deductible income on federal tax returns as you’ll have fewer state income taxes to be able to deduct. At present, 10 states provide tax credits for state taxes that include Arizona, Massachusetts, and New Mexico.

The ideal moment to claim the solar tax credit is right now

Solar Tax Credit For The Federal Government

There are approximately 10 years to make use of the entire 30% tax credit. However, just because you are able to put off 10 years does not mean you must. It’s generally best to make an investment earlier rather than later. Installing solar as early as you can allows you to begin saving money sooner, which means you’ll be able to stop paying expensive electric bills and put your money towards items that are important to you.

In addition, going solar will never be a better investment option than it is now. Other solar incentives across the nation could end prior to the federal tax credit being due. Consider net meters an incentive that will pay you the entire cost of electricity for solar energy that you provide to the grid, for an instance. Electricity providers across the nation are shifting towards net metering, and are paying solar customers less to use solar power.

It is recommended to get solar panels before net meters and utility rebates begin to disappear so that you can get the highest solar savings you can get.

How Much Will Solar Panels Add Value To Your Home?

Solar Panels Add Value To Your Home

How Much Will Solar Panels Add Value To Your Home?

You’re probably here because looking to know how much your home is worth when solar panels are fitted to it.

We conducted research into the value of homes with improvements in energy efficiency, such as home solar panels. We discovered a variety of sources of information that are reliable about the subject and have compiled the information in this article. It is possible that you are interested in what you can do to get the approximate value of the value increase for your home We’ve created an easy-to-follow guide as well.

This article will go over studies on solar and home sales from across the country as well as examples of home valuation calculations and look at factors that affect the value of solar-powered homes the most.

Solar panels boost the value of a property

Let’s begin by imagining an experiment. Imagine you’re thinking of buying either of the two houses located across exactly the same road. The only difference between them is the fact that one is equipped with enough solar panels on its rooftop installed to get rid of a $200 per month power bill. The other one has an empty roof.

That’s $2,400 per year in savings when you purchase the solar house instead of the next. You’ll not only save enormously on electricity costs every year, but you’re also decreasing the carbon footprint of your home and keeping out the negative impact of future increases in utility rates through the production of your own electricity.

It is logical that the value of a solar-powered home will be much higher than homes without solar panels. However, the issue is how much? The precise answer is contingent on a number of factors that we’ll cover in the next section, but we’ll go over three studies to help guide us to a range that you feel comfortable with in the first place.

Research has shown that solar energy is linked to the value of properties

The Appraisal Journal The Appraisal Journal authors Ruth Johnson and David Kaserman reported, “Home value increases of around $20 per dollar savings on energy bills”. In the instance of the savings of $200 per month example, you can imagine the value of the solar house to be 48,000 greater than it did before ($200 twelve months + 20= $48,000).

To give a second instance, a study conducted by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory yields the formula for a $5k value of resale increase for every Kilowatt (kW) in solar power installed. To achieve a similar increase in home value of $48,000 in the Appraiser’s Journal using this formula, you’ll need a 9.6kW system (9.6 + $5,000 equals $48,000).

At an average cost of $3500 for a kW of installation upfront and you can have the same size system installed for just $33,600. The difference in value in relation to the investment gives you an opportunity to arbitrage that is $1,500 for each kW of solar power installed. This doesn’t even take into account the federal tax credit for investment that allows you to recuperate 26 percent of the price of your solar home installation. In certain states, the value of your home increases and is exempt from any additional property taxes.

If you’re planning to sell your house faster and at a lower cost then it’s beneficial to first install solar! You can anticipate a rapid return on investment with this type of renewable energy home enhancement.

Another study from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that homebuyers pay an average of 4% more for homes with solar power systems than homes with no solar. While this estimate may seem simple, however, there are many unknown factors. For instance, the estimate doesn’t take into account the dimensions of solar panels.

If you put a tiny solar array on your house it’s not enough to use this formula to make the calculations and tell your agent who is selling your house, “Hey, the National Bureau of Economic Research stated that my house is worth 4 percent more, therefore, let’s sell it at this price instead”. To achieve the increase of $48,000 that was mentioned in this example of 4 you’ll need an investment of $1.2M. Most homes aren’t worth that amount outside California and many homeowners don’t require a 10-kW solar array to pay their electric bills.

Estimating a ballpark for an increase in the value of your home

Based on the calculations above, the solar panel’s power is at 6kW. This is the best option for electric bills of $120 per month.

  • It is possible to estimate quickly a $30,000 value boost for your home based on an increase of $30,000 using the Lawrence Berkeley Labs formula (6kW multiplied by $5,000).
  • According to the Appraisal Journal article 120 dollars of utility, savings amounts to $1,440 per year. Multiply that number by 20 and you’ll get an anticipated market value growth of $28,800
  • In the end, taking Zillow as well as a National Bureau of Economic Research study, you can determine that you’ve got the Zestimate which is $550,000 for your home. An increase of 4% in value for your home would amount to approximately $22,000.

This way the ballpark estimate for a 6kW system would range from a $22,000-$30,000 increase in the value of your home.

Solar Panels Add Value To Your Home

The factors that affect how solar energy is correlated energy and the price of a home’s sale

There are several aspects that influence the cost of your house sale such as the time the PV unit is as well as the area you live in.

The PV system is getting old

If you had your solar energy system in the year 1995 it is unlikely to gain the same home worth as a photovoltaic panel that was installed by 2022. Solar modules are way more efficient than they used to be, and as such, are more valuable the newer they are. The calculations above assume that the solar panels have at the very least 20 years of lifespan left. For the formula used by the Appraiser’s Journal, this is why they chose the multiplier of 20.

Your location

Solar panels can last for a period between 25 and 35 years and, depending on where you live, they could be cost-saving and income-generating assets. The cost of utilities varies widely in various regions, and so do other solar policies including exemptions from property taxes for solar properties. Below are the most important geographical variations in the value of homes through solar power.

Solar incentives that are based on performance

Certain states offer incentives for solar performance based on performance. They will pay you for renewable power that you generate over time. If you’re lucky enough to reside within one of the states like Massachusetts and New Jersey, your solar panel at home is worth much more.

Costs for electricity

Certain regions of the country are more expensive utility bills than other areas. Solar power is worth more in places such as New York and Hawaii due to the fact that they are more effective in terms of compensating for higher utility costs.

Solar system ownership status

If a house has solar panels installed but the owner isn’t the owner of the system as a result of a leasing agreement for solar the value of the home won’t be much more. This is because the panels aren’t part of the property. Someone other than the owner of the panels! Although savings on electricity bills are present at any time, the leasing company is able to take their panels down if they would like to.

A new customer would not be eligible for local solar incentives such as renewable energy certificates since they were returned at the expense of the leasing firm following the installation of the system.

Solar record keeping for home sales

When the time comes to sell your solar-powered home, it’s recommended to have your records ready for potential buyers to look over. It is important to prove that your solar installation was carried out by an accredited installer and was properly approved.

It is also important to keep track of your system’s warranty details and, in the ideal case, electricity bills that include before and after evidence of the savings on energy. Store these documents in a safe location and collaborate with your realtor to ensure they’re properly and clearly communicated at the time of sale.

This will allow you to preserve the most value for your home.

Final thoughts

If you’re thinking about installing solar, and you’re also considering moving within the near future take it on.

You’ll not only be able to save cash on your electric bills in the short run, but when it comes time to sell your house, you can anticipate your solar panel for your home’s installation costs to be higher than the amount you pay back in full. Also, you can expect that your home will sell faster.

Solar is a smart, stylish investment. When you’re looking for a new home is there any reason why potential buyers shouldn’t prefer a more efficient house?

What Is A Solar Tracker?

solar tracking

What Is A Solar Tracker?

Solar trackers enable you to track your solar panel’s path of the sun through the sky, as a sunflower. As such, they are able to generate more solar energy. However, solar trackers are expensive to purchase. Does the additional solar power output worth the added cost of a solar tracker? In the majority of situations, it makes more sense to put up additional solar panels.

In this article, we’ll go over everything you should be aware of about solar trackers, from the types available to whether they’re worth investing in.

Solar Tracker

Solar trackers are an instrument that tracks the sun as it travels through the skies. In the event that solar trackers get connected by solar panels, they will follow the course of the sun and generate more renewable energy to utilize. Solar trackers are typically paired with ground-mounted solar systems, however, recently, rooftop-mounted trackers are now available on the market.

Usually, solar tracking devices will be attached to the racking of solar panels. The solar panels are able to follow the movements of the sun. The method by which the solar tracking system motion depends on the type of system it’s.

There are three kinds of solar tracking systems

Manual solar trackers

solar tracking

Manual trackers require that you physically move the panels at different intervals during the day in order to track the sun. It’s not always feasible because you’ll need an individual to continuously monitor the sun’s position and direction that the solar panels are in.

Passive solar trackers

solar tracking

Passive trackers have a liquid that has low boiling points that will evaporate when exposed to sunlight. After the liquid has evaporated, the tilt system is distorted. This results in the panels tilting in the direction of the sun’s radiations.

Passive solar trackers – Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Rely on the heat for operation and not on energy
  • Not as expensive as active trackers
Cons
  • More inaccurate than active trackers.
  • Not as efficient as activity trackers.
  • Avoid working at low temperatures.

Active solar trackers

solar tracking

Active trackers depend on hydraulic cylinders or motors to shift their position. Motors in active trackers can shift the PV panels to ensure they face the sun. Although this is more efficient as compared to manual trackers elements within the motors can easily fail. This could result in increased maintenance costs over the life of the device.

Then, solar trackers may be classified more, based on the direction they are moving in. A solar tracker may be one of the following:

  • Single Axis Solar Tracker
  • Dual Axis solar tracker

Single Axis solar tracker

Single-axis trackers are able to follow the sun’s location in its journey across the east-west axis. They are typically utilized in utility-scale construction projects. A single-axis tracker could boost production by 25% and 35 percent.

solar tracking
Single Axis solar tracker – Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Typically costs less
  • More reliable
  • Longer lifespan
Cons
  • Not as energy-efficient
  • Not as advanced

Dual solar tracker with the axis

The tracker does not just follow the sun’s movement from east-west and follows the sun as it moves between north and south. Two-axis trackers are more frequent in small and residential commercial solar projects with small spaces, meaning they are able to produce enough power to supply their energy needs.

Dual-axis trackers could boost energy production by 40%

solar tracking
Dual-axis trackers – Pros & Cons
Pros
  • More energy efficient
  • More accurate
Cons
  • Not as reliable
  • Shorter lifespan
  • Typically more expensive

What is the price of the cost of a solar tracker?

Solar trackers can dramatically add to the price of a solar photovoltaic system. A typical 4 Kilowatt solar panel that is mounted to the ground costs approximately $13,000. Tracking equipment costs anywhere between $500 and more than 1,000 per unit.

If you added one axis tracking system in that same grid, this could raise the price to around $20,000. It’s a premium of 57% more than the price for the array fixed. only three percent more sun energy output.

A dual-axis tracking device could cost more, amounting to about $26,000. That’s more than twice the cost of the whole fixed-ground mount system!

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a solar tracker?

solar tracking

As with other things solar trackers come with benefits as well as disadvantages.

Pros of solar trackers

The main advantage of the solar tracking system is the boost in electricity production. In general, a solar panel equipped with a single-axis tracker will yield an improvement of 25 to 35 percent. The dual-axis tracker can boost performance by 5-10 percent.

If you reside in an area of high latitudes where the sun’s location in the sky is extremely variable during winter and summer, a dual-axis tracker could be an effective option to maximize the solar power you generate and provide enough power to your home or your property. The ideal position and angle of solar panels are dependent on the location you’re in the world. Learn more about your place of residence and the ideal angle for solar panels here.

Cons of solar trackers

Tracking systems typically have higher maintenance and installation expenses. Solar trackers will be more expensive in the beginning than fixed solar panel systems due to the fact that it is more complicated and includes moving components. This leads to the second aspect of higher costs in solar tracking system maintenance. More complicated systems require more maintenance, which adds costs over the course of time. For homes typically, it’s not worth the cost. However, for commercial installations for businesses, like those with little roof space, but greater power output, the improved efficiency of the use of a solar tracker could be worth the cost.

Another issue with solar trackers is that they’re usually too heavy to be utilized in rooftop solar installations. If you are looking to install an array of solar panels that tracks features ensure that you have an array that is mounted on the ground.

Pros
  • Systems that track offer higher amounts of energy output when compared to those with solar panels fixed since they can track the sun’s movement.
  • The range of trackers offered by companies such as Allearth Solar and First Sunergy allows you to locate a tracker that is perfect for your requirements.
  • Solar trackers are extremely beneficial in areas that have time-of-use electricity prices. More energy will be generated during peak times and you don’t need to pay for grid electricity at times when it’s the most expensive.
Cons
  • Solar trackers can be very costly and can easily double the cost.
  • Solar trackers consist of moving components, which means they are more prone to fail. This results in more expensive maintenance expenses.
  • If you decide to install trackers, it may require additional preparation and planning, such as digging trenches for wiring and additional grading of the site.

Do solar trackers warrant the extra cost?

solar tracking

Most of the time solar trackers aren’t worth the extra expense even though they generate more power. Since solar panel is less expensive than they have ever been and are more affordable than ever, it will cost less to put in many solar panels, than to add a tracking system.

As an example, suppose you put in 15 ground-mounted solar panels that have 300 watts. The total cost for such a system could be $16,625.

Now, suppose you’d like to have one axis of solar tracker integrated into this system. This would cost you an additional $500 for each solar module. This would be $7,500 for just the equipment for tracking. The installation of double-axis tracking equipment could cost you another $15,000!

It’s true that systems that incorporate tracking equipment will generate more electricity than fixed systems. But are the savings really worth the cost of tracking equipment?

The table below outlines the cost of a fixed system or a single-axis tracking system, as well as an axis-based dual-axis tracking system, which could save you money on your energy bill:

Solar system type

System cost

Annual energy savings

Estimated payback period

Fixed ground-mounted system

$14,625

$1,100

13 years

Ground-mounted system with single axis tracker

$22,125

$1,430

15.5 years

Ground-mounted system with double axis tracker

$29,625

$1,540

19 years

It is possible to spend an additional $15,000 on a tracking device for a tracking system and receive an additional $440 in savings per year. The payback period for this system would increase to more than 20 years!

You could instead add 6 solar panels to generate exactly the amount of energy that a dual-axis system can. The greatest part is that you’ll need to shell out an additional $5,850 to increase the number of solar panels that are part of your energy system.

To track or not to track?

solar tracking

In most cases particularly with regard to residential solar installations solar trackers aren’t worth the extra expense. This is the reason solar trackers aren’t used as frequently in the residential solar market.

The only time solar trackers are beneficial is when there is little space for installation. If you don’t have enough space to install additional solar panels installation, the solar tracking system will permit you to produce more power within a smaller space. Solar trackers can also be useful for large-scale commercial or utility installations.

It is important to speak with a nearby solar contractor to determine what a solar tracking system will cost you. You are able to utilize our calculator for solar to determine the cost of solar in your region and also how much switching to solar will reduce your electric cost.

Are solar tracking systems the right choice for you?

solar tracking

Rooftop installation is less costly expenses and doesn’t need any space for a yard so it’s the best option for homeowners who are interested in solar. In the end, many solar panels for homes don’t come with solar trackers and are most likely not worth the expense. If you’ve got a south-facing roof, then the solar panels you have installed will be designed to maximize sunlight, which eliminates the requirement for a tracker. To make the most of your solar panel, consider buying one of the best solar panels in the present.

Solar trackers provide the most opportunity to save money in high-latitude locations because of the annual movement that the sun makes. This is why solar users who reside in Alaska as well as some parts of the northern part of the continental U.S. may want to think about integrating trackers into their systems. For the vast most US residents solar panel owners, the sun’s motion won’t affect your panel’s production to the extent that the use of a tracker system can provide significant financial advantages.

For the majority of people, it is better to install an array for rooftop use that faces south or a ground-mounted system that faces towards the south.

The solar tracking system is frequently used in commercial projects, generally with a capacity of more than 1 megawatt (MW). For commercial-scale solar arrays, the long-term benefits of increasing output over the course of time will be more than enough for the first investment and ongoing maintenance expenses worthwhile. Furthermore, commercial-scale solar arrays tend to be ground-mounted which makes solar trackers an option.

When do solar panels function the best?

Solar panel efficiency is impacted by:

  • Radiation– the amount of Watts falling onto an object at any point in time
  • Insolation is the force that falls on a flat surface over time (determines the energy that is produced in kWh)
  • Temperature solar panels perform best at 77 ° F (26 degrees Celsius)
  • Orientation direction pointing due South for the Northern hemisphere and due North for the Southern
  • Tilt angle Latitude of the location is +15 degrees in Winter and -15 degrees in Summer
Optimum Solar Panel Angle – Best Angle For Solar Panels

Chart illustrating the effect of tilt angle on the output of solar panels in the USA:

40

114 – 14% increase

117 – 17% increase

50

110 – 10% increase

116 – 16% increase

There is nothing we can do about radiation or insolation, other than to keep the panels in good condition and ensure that they’re not shaded.

Temperature is the biggest danger as power output decreases in a range of 0.3 percent to 0.5 percent. The specifications of standard panels provided by the manufacturers provide the panel’s power output in watts that is based on temperatures that are 25 ° C. The problem is that the temperature of panel surfaces can easily exceed the temperature of 65° C during summer.

Tilt angle and orientation are two things that we definitely can alter and some owners of fixed arrays can adjust the angles a masse during the seasons to ensure that the tilt angle is at the ideal angle.

Install a solar tracker for your home or add additional solar panels?

In addition to the cost of installation, which is around $3/watt the cost of purchasing equipment amounts to $1.70. What is the actual cost of solar panels per watt is decreasing every year until, in the majority of places in 2021, it’s less than $1 per watt.

For the majority of homeowners, it’s not worth the effort to install an intricate piece of equipment, such as the sun-tracker when they can just put in several solar panels and get the same result, especially when they have the space on their roof for the installation.

The sun tracker we used in our study saved 2133 kWh/year. This energy produced by solar panels required to compensate for this increase in output is the energy savings divided by the peak hours of sunlight in the year:

  • 2133 / 1422 peak-sun-hours = 1.5kW

For around $4000, an additional 1.5 energy-efficient solar array can be connected for the same effect but with longer lasting and lower maintenance.

solar tracking

The following diagram shows the differences between dual-axis solar trackers and solar panels fixed for 24 hours. The power of the array is 100 kw. This is much more than the standard home system. When it comes to massive systems, savings are significant.

Final Thoughts

Verdict

  • Solar tracking systems enable solar panels to track the sun’s path through the sky, generating more solar energy.
  • Although solar trackers increase solar panels’ energy output, they are extremely expensive and could increase the price of installing solar panels.
  • In many instances, it’s more economical to add more solar panels to boost the energy efficiency of the system than to set up a solar tracker.
  • If you are in a tight space and are unable to install additional solar panels and a solar tracker may be the ideal option for you.

The 10 Solar Flood Lights

It is well-known that bright lights deter thieves and other ne’er do-wells. Before the advent of solar-powered lighting, homeowners had to either have experience with wiring or hire a professional electrician to install outdoor light fixtures. Today’s solar flood lights open up a whole new world of illumination–they’re affordable, powerful, and, best of all, they’re a snap to install.

The solar flood light market has boomed in recent years with more manufacturers offering brighter lights in smaller sizes. To find the best brands, I tried them all.

The size of your home and the preference for the lights to stay on or turn off depending on the motion will determine the best solar flood light. Find out what you should look for in solar flood lights and the results of my hands-on tests.

I was able to lighten a 35-foot long sidewalk using the Otdair solar flood lamps. The lights were placed on the wall near me and directed in the right direction. Although 550 lumens may not be very bright, the light was enough to make it easy to see the path I was on. To direct the light, I could adjust the heads to the upward or downward position.

These are motion-detection-only lights, making them well suited for both security and illuminating nighttime areas for safety purposes. Each light was on when I was within 25 feet of it. They stayed on for approximately 30 seconds after I left the area.

They are easy to install with screws and have an IP65 rating. This means they were not damaged during the snow and sleet storms.

Both lights lit up when tested in the morning just before dawn.

Specification:

  • Lumens: 2,200
  • Type: Motion detection
  • IP rating: IP65

The TBI Security Solar Light has 216 LEDs on the front panel and two adjustable side panels. It offers a wide range of illumination. I was able to rotate and tilt the three light heads to change the direction of the lights so that they illuminated at a 180-degree angle.

Although the manufacturer claims that the panels can be adjusted to 355 degrees by rotating and tilting its three light heads, the maximum degree of directional illumination is only possible if the light is mounted on a corner of a building. The light will be blocked by the building if it is not installed on the corner of a building.

The light’s motion sensor impressed me. It picked up my movements from 38 feet away. It is powered by a 2,200 mAh lithium-ion cell and offers 2,200 lumens. Although it is not a bright light, it can be used to see up to 40 feet away.

TBI lights are IP65 rated to protect from dust and resist occasional rain, though it was not affected by the snow or sleet storm. It performed just as well as before the storm.

The TBI flood light was activated by motion and remained on for approximately 30 seconds even after I moved beyond the sensor’s range. It stayed on as long as I kept moving within the range of the sensor. The only problem was that the beams could be seen in dark areas if the sidelights were moved outwards more than 45 degrees.

It wasn’t an issue for me as I placed the main light in the middle of the patio and each sidelight toward the two side gates. This could be a problem for those who want a strong field of illumination.

A flood light doesn’t cost much. When the NACINIC LED solar floodlight was set to motion detection mode, it turned on at 15 feet from my sensor. It also worked in dusk to dawn mode, with full intensity. The dimmable intensity light turns on when the sensor detects motion and dims after 20 seconds to low intensity.

The Nacinic light only lasted 4 hours in full intensity, dusk to dawn mode. This was due to the rapid depletion of the rechargeable battery. The battery lasted the entire night in the low-intensity motion-detection mode, which I prefer.

The NACINIC flood lamp is powered by a 2,200 mAh lithium battery. The flood light’s 288 LED diodes emit 650 lumens at a wide angle of 270 degrees. Each flood light is sold in a 2-pack. It has an IP rating of 65, which means it is dust-tight. It was not affected by sleet or ice.

Tin Sum Solar Energy flood lights are advertised at 24,000 lumens. However, compared to other lights I tested it is closer to 4,500 lumens. It’s still a great light, which turns on automatically when the sun goes down and remains on until the battery runs out. Although it didn’t stay on until sunrise for me, it did last 6 hours after receiving a full charge.

The floodlight was installed on a tree that overlooked my dogs’ play area entrance. I could see the gate clearly from the window of my house, which is about 150 feet away. Before the Tin Sum Solar Energy floodlight, I was required to have a flashlight with me when I took the dogs outside and brought them back inside.

The best way to use the light (for me) was to switch it on/off via the remote control. It would be switched on when I was going to the play area, and it would remain on while my dogs were playing in the yard. It would be switched back on when we returned indoors. To use the remote, I needed to be within 20 feet of it. It is IP67 rated and survived the snow and sleet storms without any issues.

The light was mounted under an eave in a garage on the east and the solar panel was installed on the south side via a 9-foot cord. The long cord let me place the light wherever I wanted it to be, not just on the sunny side.

The IPX4 rating on this light indicates that it can withstand a splash of water but not suffer damage. The floodlight can withstand some rain or snow, but I placed it under the eave to ensure extra protection.

After sunset, I walked by the light and it turned on. While I was walking nearby, it stayed on for about 30 seconds before turning off. It provided 30 feet of bright white light and clear light, although it did not have the same illumination range as other lights. During the time I was testing solar lights, we had a snow/sleet storm and the Westinghouse light was completely covered with ice for several days. It still worked well after the ice had melted.

The 800 lumens of bright, warm light each of the small URPOWER solar floodlights emits is 800 lumens. They can be placed in the same area as a patio or walkway to provide ample illumination.

Each of the four URPOWER light fixtures was installed on trees next to a small playground. The lights lit up as soon as I walked within 20 feet of them. They remained on for as long as I was moving around the area and eventually turned off after 30 minutes. Because the beams from each light are approximately 100 degrees wide, I found the best illumination by placing them close together (about 15 feet apart).

Although the URPOWER lights aren’t equipped with many bells or whistles, they are well-made and very bright for their small size. They collectively emit 3,200 lumens when all four lights are turned on. They were fine after the snowstorm and sleet storm and lit up brightly the morning before dawn.

The eLEDing overhead solar floodlight illuminates the ground below with a wide, circular beam of light. This is in contrast to other solar lights which shine outward but don’t light up the area directly below.

The dusk-to-dawn light was one of my favorites because it did not shine light into my eyes, even though it was installed above a shed door. The light output is 500 lumens, which is enough to illuminate a 25-foot area in a semicircle. Frosted light covers soften the light, making it more like a white glow rather than a bright beam. It can be installed over garage doors or side-entry doors or on a wall or tall fence that overlooks a path.

There are two modes for the leading light: it can either turn on at night and then stay on or it can light up when it senses motion. It worked the best because it was set to motion detection.

The battery ran out in the dusk-to-dawn mode in less than four hours. The eLEDing lamp turned on when motion was detected at 15 feet distance. It stayed on for 30 seconds after I moved away from the range. It has an IP65 rating and was not affected by the snow or sleet storms we experienced.

How to Choose the Best Solar Flood Lights

Solar flood lights are very affordable once they’re installed. The solar panels in the solar flood light collect energy from the sun and then store it in their internal batteries until nighttime. Solar flood lights can be installed almost anywhere. However, they will shine brightest if they are in direct sunlight during the day. Consider the following before you decide on solar lights for your home.

Light Brightness, Coverage

Lumens are a measure of the intensity of light. The brighter the light, the more lumens it will produce. A 100-watt standard incandescent bulb, which is no longer available, produces approximately 1,600 lumens. An indoor night light, on the other hand, produces around 20 lumens.

The lumens of most solar flood lights will be stated in the description. The beam’s width also affects the light’s brightness. A narrower beam will appear brighter. Floodlights usually cast light over a 50-to 280-degree arc from the light source. This allows you to choose a flood light to light a narrow walkway, or to illuminate an entire yard.

Dusk-to-Dawn vs. Motion detection

Flood lights that go on from dusk to dawn turn on when the sun sets. They stay on until the battery is dead or they go out of charge. These lights are a great option for lighting your property continuously. Their batteries might not be charged to their maximum capacity if it was rainy or overcast the day before.

The floodlight might go out after a few hours if this happens. Motion detection flood lamps turn on when they detect motion and stay on for a set amount of time before turning off. Motion-detection lighting is less energy-intensive and will last longer.

Capacity and Type Battery

The solar flood lights are powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. They charge during the day and then use stored energy to power them at night. They are rated in milliamp-hours (mAh) and built into the lights. The battery’s capacity is determined by the rating. Solar flood lights have ratings that range from 2,000 mAh up to 3,600mAh.

Charging and Run Time

For solar flood lights to be fully charged, they need to be exposed to sufficient sunlight for 6-8 hours. The battery can be charged and will run the light for between 3-8 hours depending on whether it is running continuously or turning on when it senses motion.

Large-capacity batteries are required for solar lights that operate from dawn to dusk. These solar lights are often equipped with large solar panels. This allows them to store and draw as much solar energy during the day as possible so that they can stay on all night.

Bulb Types

Nearly all solar flood lights today feature bright light emitting diodes (LEDs), which cast intense light beams, without heating up and drawing much power. For intense security lighting, LEDs are the best choice.

Ingress Protection Rating

It is a two-digit number that indicates how well an outdoor light resists moisture and debris. The first number is used to indicate how resistant the light is to damage from solid objects. It ranges between 1 and 6, with 6 being the most secure, and capable of keeping out fine dust.

The second number, which can range from 1-8, indicates how resistant the light is to water. A rating of 8 indicates that the light is completely waterproof. Flood lights are rated between 65 and 67.

Our Verdict

The Westinghouse Solar Flood Light offers security and illumination. However, it is brighter and more visible when motion is detected. It can stay lit for as long as 30 seconds after the motion has stopped. The NACINIC Solar Flood Light has an optional dim mode. This saves battery power and is reliable, affordable, and reliable.

How To Size A Solar System

Solar System

How To Size A Solar System

In the solar sector, the term “solar size of the system” refers to defining the capacity of a solar panel system to generate electricity. It is typically expressed in the form of Kilowatts (kW) 1 kW equals 1,000 watts. The majority of home solar panel systems range from 4 kW to sixteen kW in size.

Solar system dimensions are the primary thing to consider when you are researching or purchasing solar panels to install on your house. It’s because it’s the dimension of your solar panel and not the solar panel’s effectiveness or the brand of equipment that determines the amount of solar power to be produced on your roof.

A solar panel system of 10 kW will generate 10,000 watts of power in Standard Test Conditions*. In real-world situations such as a 10 kW solar panel will generate less power because all of the elements will not be as perfect as they would be in a test laboratory. The total amount of electricity produced from a 10 kW unit in a roof is somewhere between 1,440 to 1,800 kilowatt hours of electricity each month.

What Are Standard Test Conditions (STC)?

These are the requirements required by solar panel manufacturers to work at their capacity also known as the capacity on the label. The solar cells should be able to produce precisely 1,000 watts of light per square meter that shines on them, and they must operate at steady temperatures of at least 77°F (25C). Each solar panel is assigned a performance rating (‘size’) under STC laboratory testing.

How to calculate your home’s energy consumption

It is possible to add up all the wattage and calculate how many hours each appliance is being used per day. However, this is cumbersome and inaccurate.

Some appliances, like refrigerators, can be hard to estimate. They have compressor motors and variable instantaneous power. The easiest way to get it is to use the utility bill from last year, which usually shows the entire year’s energy consumption ( kWh).

Divide this number by 12 to get your monthly consumption or by 365 to get your average daily consumption. The average US amount is 30kW per Day. However, yours will vary depending on where you live.

What number of batteries are required to power a house?

Solar System

Battery storage

Battery storage can have a significant impact on the size of a solar power plant. The following factors will determine how much solar system size it will have an impact on:

Backup power needed

Are you looking for emergency lighting that lasts for a few hours? Do you need enough solar-plus storage to power your entire house for 24 to 48 hour if the grid goes down?

While the former option won’t have an impact on system size, the second will. You need to ensure that your system is large enough to meet your daily energy needs and fully charge your batteries even on days when there’s very little solar production. A cloudy day in winter.

If your home consumes 30kWh per 24 hours, you can quickly calculate how many batteries you will need.

There are 2 types of batteries for home use

  • LiFeP04
  • lead acid

I prefer it, but since lead-acid is still the most popular, I’ll use them as an example.

Deep-cycle batteries can be charged up to 80%, but it is best to discharge 50% to extend battery life.

This means we need to double how much energy is required from the batteries. It is okay to have a depth of discharge of 80% from time to time.

This is how the calculation looks:

Energy for 24 hours = 30kWh

30kWh in battery amp-hours (Ah) = 2500Ah (12V batteries)

Total battery capacity needed for 24 hours = 2500Ah x 2 = 5000Ah

25 batteries rated at 200Ah will be required to power this home for 24 hours.

Ways to Calculate the Size of a Solar System

PVWatts

PVWatts is a free online tool created by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of (NREL), a national laboratory of the Department of Energy. PVWatts uses historical weather and solar irradiance records to analyze photovoltaic (PV), buildings all over the globe.

Solar System

PVWatts gives you a precise breakdown of the system’s output, down to the hour, based on your location.

It is a powerful tool and can be used by solar companies to create advanced solar analyses and estimates, as well as a consumer-facing tools calculator.

PVWatts’ biggest flaw is that it doesn’t calculate solar system size for you – you’ll have to use the tool to do it yourself. It requires a little reverse engineering to do this. You will need to divide your annual energy consumption by the solar energy that 1 kW of panels can produce.

PVWatts – Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Millions of data points power the government system
  • Free to use
  • Works globally
  • The trust of the solar industry
Cons
  • It is difficult to use for the average consumer
  • Reverse engineering is required to calculate the system size
  • Price information is not available from the system
  • Lacks financial analysis

Global Solar Atlas

The Global Solar Atlas provides a summary of solar power potential and solar resources globally. It is provided by the World Bank Group as a free service to …

Let’s take this resource as an example:

Let’s assume that the house is located in Nevada USA. The average daily electricity consumption is 35kWh.

The irradiation at this site Global Solar Atlas is 6.773Wh/m2/day.

Solar System
  • Geographic Location: Nevada, USA
  • Average daily energy consumption: 35kWh/day
  • Irradiation (peak-sun-hours) for Burns, Oregon is 6.773kWh/m2 per day

PV System Losses

A working home solar system can cause losses. 23% can be lost, and this must be taken out of the solar array power rating.

Solar System

With 23% losses in mind, the energy needs are:

35kWh/day x 1.44 = 50.4kWh/day load.

Now to take into account the efficiency of the inverter, which is about 96%.

The power to be supplied to the inverter = 50.4/0.96 = 52.5kWh/day.

The average daily irradiation is 6.773kWh/m2 (also known as peak-sun-hours)

52.5kWh/day of power can be produced by:

  • 52.5/6.773kWh/m2= 7.75kW or 8kW of solar panels working at 100% capacity rating.
  • To find the number of solar panels needed, divide the wattage needed by wattage of each solar panel (say, 300 watts):
  • The number of panels needed = 8kW/300 watts per panel = 26 solar panels.

Solar Company

Solar System

To make the most precise projections of solar panel production, solar companies may combine tools such as PVWatts and an in-person assessment. Reputable solar companies will gladly calculate the best solar system for your energy requirements and offer a free quote.

Solar company – Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Most accurate calculations
  • Can adjust calculations based on your requirements
  • Knowledge of local rules and regulations
  • Includes financial modeling for system size
  • Can provide you a quote for a solar installation
Cons
  • Require at least one year of electricity bills
  • Many people prefer to get an estimate before talking to a solar company

How many solar panels are needed to produce 5000 watts of power?

It may seem obvious to you, but it is not as easy as it seems. If we were to use 300-watt solar panels then, in theory, would divide the power needed by 300, which would give 16.6 or 17 panels, if you round up.

Unfortunately, it’s not like that in the real world

Although solar panels are rated at 300 Watts, this is not the maximum you can expect from them. Instead, the Standard Test Conditions (STC) specify a level of 1000 W per square meter.

Except for the difference in irradiance all solar systems experience losses of around 23%. To account for this loss, you will need to multiply your solar panel-rated powers. This is equivalent to multiplying total power by 1.44.

  • 5000 watts x 1.44 = 7000 watts
  • Number of solar panels required = 23 panels each rating at 300 watts

Roof characteristics

The orientation (‘azimuth’) and pitch (‘tilt’) of your roof will determine the orientation and angle of your solar panels. Both factors, especially direction, can have a considerable impact on solar energy production.

A solar array facing east or west will produce approximately 15% less output than one facing south. If you can only install on an east or west-facing roof, you’ll have to increase the size of the solar system to account for that.

the Solar Charge Controller

Any solar power system that has backup batteries should have the Solar Charge Controller to ensure that the batteries are not charging too much and also to stop the batteries from returning their charge back to solar panels during periods of low sunlight (i.e. the nighttime).

Because a solar controller performs its job in conjunction with the array of solar panels and storage battery, it follows that the selection and size are determined by the components.

Solar System

Current and voltage are the two variables used to determine the size of solar charge controllers. The solar controller should be able to handle the highest power output from solar panels and deliver the right DC charge current and voltage to batteries.

For systems operating continuously, that is the standard industry 1.2 (20 percent extra) de-rating rate is set to protect the controller from being damaged by excessive solar panel power or current.

Example:

12-volt solar panels with a capacity of 100 W with the following electrical characteristics:

  • Pm = 100Wp,
  • Vmp = 17.5 Vdc,
  • Imp = 5.7A,
  • Voc = 21.0V,
  • Isc = 6.2A.

The solar panels described above have a short-circuit current (Isc) of 6.20A. The solar charge controller rating for four solar panels rated at 6.20A

4 x 6.20 x 1.2 = 29.76A, or 30 amps.

A solar charge controller like the one pictured above should be rated at 30 amps at 12 volts or more.

Key Takeaways

  • When sizing solar panels, consider how much electricity your home uses.
  • To find the PV system that is most in need of replacement, use the utility bills monthly average.
  • A 5000 kW system suffices for an average American home.
  • A solar energy system’s installed cost can nearly double if a battery bank or other storage device is required
  • To save money on solar costs, you can use your old electric bill to identify ways that electricity consumption can be reduced.
  • How much electricity is used by the air conditioner? To spread the load, it’s a smart idea to install soft-starts ( National Renewable Energy Laboratory).
  • The next step is to determine how many hours of sunshine per day. How much solar energy can you generate for each square foot with solar panels mounted at the average radiation level in your location?
  • The peak sunlight hours are very important in calculating solar size. Sunny days can come and go so the average solar hour across the seasons is the figure you should use
  • How large is your roof in square feet This factor, along with the amount of sunlight, determines the size and output of your photovoltaic system.
  • The peak hours and solar system size give you a rough estimate of how much solar power will you have

Can You Walk On Solar Panels

Solar Panels

Can You Walk On Solar Panels

Making the switch to a greener energy source, such as solar panels is always a wise choice. It provides additional support to your roof, reduces the carbon footprint of your home, and cut down on your energy costs. While it can provide many benefits but the upkeep of these panels can be difficult. It is also necessary to take care to clean them frequently to stop dust from building up and affecting the effective storage of your panels.

One tip that you’ll find frequently on maintaining your panels in top working condition is not to walk across solar panels. Experts suggest that you should not take this step. Our article will help clarify this confusion and clarify the reasons for the reason why experts aren’t getting in the way of this producer of solar energy.

What is the maximum weight solar Panels Take on?

In the beginning, it’s crucial to realize that there are a variety of varieties that solar panels come in but not all of them are equally robust as the other one. For example, thin-film flexible solar panels are not as durable and robust as standard crystal silicon panels.

The glass on the top of PV modules is designed to shield it. It’s made with specific specifications to resist damage. It can withstand a few tonnes of snow blows from hail or dust particles as well as endure the force of hurricanes.

The majority of solar panels can withstand a maximal weight ratio of 75 pounds for each square inch (psi). Since the typical PV panel measures 65 x 39 inches (2,535 square. in) The PV module is able to be able to withstand around 190lbs that’s a bit below the average weight of an individual and therefore possible to walk over it without causing damage. If you weigh more than 200 pounds should not stand on the solar module since there is a greater chance of breaking the glass.

How Can Solar Panels Get Damaged by Walking on Top of Them?

Solar Panels

There are many ways to harm a panel or decrease the power output. This, when considering the solar panel’s cost isn’t worthwhile. This article explains the various harm you can do to PV modules by walking over them.

Exceptions For Marine Solar Panels

There are marine panels specifically designed to be walkable and designed to endure the harsh marine conditions, however they don’t work well for commercial or residential roofing surfaces.

Smudging the Glass

In certain instances there is a reduction in power output from a PV system walking across a module may result in the scratched glass. Based on how deep and deep the scratch it will result in reduced output of your solar panel. In order to fix the issue, it is necessary to contact an expert to fix the damage and replace the entire glass of the panel.

Scratch the Glass

In certain instances, there is a reduction in power output from a PV system walking over a module could be a sign of scratched glass. Depending on the depth and severe the scratch it will result in an increase in the output of your solar panel. To remedy this issue you must contact an expert technician to fix the damage and replace the entire glass of the panel.

The breaking of a Solar Cell

If the weight you place on the top of your PV module is excessive it could damage or damage a solar cell. The majority of the time, in 60% of instances that a solar panel is damaged, there’s an immediate reduction in the power output of the PV module’s performance, leading to a reduction in voltage or a reduction in power overall. When the panel is not wired with microinverters or optimizers, there could be a continuous reduction in the energy output of the system. Your insurance provider may pay for this loss in the event of a lucky strike If otherwise, you’ll need to take the necessary steps to repair or replace your panel.

Breaking the Busbars between Solar Cells

While a damaged solar cell can affect the efficiency of the system should you cause damage to the busbars that connect the solar cells that are between them in a PV module, the system will be severely affected. This could be a huge issue in the case of a grid-connected solar array because you’ll be many hours without electricity until you resolve the problem.

Busbars that connect solar cells ensure the flow of electricity from one solar cell to the next and also from each panel. The majority of modules come with multiple conductors to guarantee the proper circulation of electricity, without overheating the module.

If you break one tire that connects the solar cells there’s a chance of the solar module will begin to overheat due to this. You must disconnect the panel or the entire string and then replace it to resolve this. If you damage several busbars, your entire PV string could be disconnected because of the interruption of flow that is creating an open circuit in the PV system.

Do you have to be careful walking in the Solar Panels?

Solar Panels

If you’ve put solar panels on your rooftop, you might think about walking over them to repair them in the event that they fail. You might also decide to walk on them simply because you feel proud owning one and taking a step to protect the environment.

Whatever the reason what are the rules to walk on solar panels?

Do you risk getting burned if you walk across solar panels. In addition are they likely to be damaged if you put too high stress on them.

For the answer to your second query No, you will not be electrocuted. They are safe to stroll on. But, it’s advised against walking on the sun-drenched panels because of a number of reasons. The first reason is that solar panels can be expensive. If you walk across the frames of solar panels or on cells, they could be scratched or damaged. If a cell becomes damaged and damaged, the potential for the power it produces to decrease grows.

Furthermore, in the event of diverse weather conditions and natural disasters even a tiny crevice could grow in size because the continual thermal contraction or expansion will cause the surrounding material to break. In the end, when you consider how much they cost and how difficult they can be to set up or maintain, it’s too risky of damaging one.

Can Solar Panels Break?

Solar Panels

The answer is straightforward. Yes. They could break and there are a variety of components that can make your fully efficient and energy-efficient machine fail or even be broken. For instance, if you walk across solar panels. This is explained clearly in the earlier section. For more details dependent on the type of materials that you use in your panel, and the weight you carry, it can actually damage the solar cells, causing them to become less efficient.

It’s even more dangerous If you’re wearing any type of footwear onto the panels. The dirt on your soles (like rocks or shards) could cause scrapes or scratches on the panel’s surface that can cause the panel to deactivate cells.

Another cause is natural calamities. Hail, in particular, can result in microcracks forming within your panels. These cracks are not visible to the eye but could cause serious harm to your panels when they are accumulated. The snow can also alter the thermal conditions of cells, which can cause their degeneration in terms of performance. Extreme temperature fluctuations can cause damage to or even break the panels.

Additionally lightning and storms are not a choice. Sure, the performance of solar panels declines over the course of time. In light of the above factors, do you risk more when walking across solar panel cells, instead of maintaining them for at minimum 25 years? Most likely not.

Can a broken Solar Panel Work? and How do I fix a damaged Panel?

So, what do you do in the event that you break the solar panel while running over it? Did you ruin your investment? The answer is dependent on the amount of damage that incident has caused. In most cases, the homeowner’s insurance will pay for the damages. If just one cell has been damaged or damaged, you might have to replace just the damaged cell, which is not likely to cost you an excessive amount.

If you’re an authority with panels or are able to complete the repairs by yourself, you can follow the old-fashioned method of cleansing the surfaces using denatured alcohol before applying UV-resistant two-part epoxy to close the cracks and also waterproof the panels. This process, however, requires extreme diligence.

Solar panels don’t completely stop working since you scratched on them having walked on there. There could be a reduction in the output of power, however around 10% to 20%. If you’re looking to determine how damaged they are then you can take an assessment of the voltage that is across the tabs on the cells. If they’re not severely damaged it’s possible to get between 85% and 100 % of the rating voltage.

If the damaged or cracked cell didn’t cover the entire surface the waterproofing process can be the solution. The most serious scenario is when the entire panel has a replacement. Microcracks usually are covered under the warranty. Therefore, you could check them out with an expert to ensure a more efficient repair.

Do I need to walk onto the Solar Panels in order to Decontaminate Them?

If you’re seeking to conduct a clean-up of your solar panels and seek advice on how to do it, this section is ideal for you. Here are some helpful tips for performing cleaning and maintenance on your PV system, without risking the PV modules or employing an expert service.

The first step is to purchase the correct solar panel cleaning equipment. Here’s a list of what you’ll require:

  • Lint-free cloth.
  • Soft pad, with an extended pole.
  • Non-abrasive cleaner
  • A low-pressure hose with a water supply

After you have taken your tools ready for cleaning your solar panels, how do you proceed should you do? Use these tips to cleanse your PV modules:

  1. Make sure to clean your panels in the afternoons or evenings when they’ve cooled.
  2. Apply water to the panels, allowing them to scrub off the loose particles.
  3. Spray non-abrasive cleaner then use the soft pad and an extension pole to wash the glass.
  4. To make borders, apply the lint-free cotton cloth as they’re very delicate.
  5. Then utilize the sprayer to water the panels, and then scrub off the debris.
  6. Examine for cracks.

Conclusion

Although solar panels are able to withstand the weight of a large amount and it is possible to take a walk over them, it’s not advised. Numerous factors could result in damage to panels in the PV system, and the risk isn’t worth the risk. While you are able to cleanse your solar panels on your own, however, we only recommend walking around the PV system or to hire certified technicians to do the repairs and maintenance needed on the roof, to avoid damage to it.

  • Light fixture
  • Controller board
  • Four-cell solar array
  • Photoresistor

Through a diode, the solar cells are connected to the battery. The battery charges during the day.

The controller board receives input from the photoresistor and energy from the battery and solar cells. The controller board turns on the light fixture when the photoresistor signals darkness.
It is crucial that the lantern’s location be correct in order to function properly. To get the best out of the solar cell, position it south at a perpendicular angle to the sun.

Types of Solar Lantern

Compressible: Some inflate like balloons, while others squish like accordion. However, compressible lanterns are most popular. They can be collapsed down to less than half an in thickness.

Fixed: There is a variety of “fixed” (i.e. non-compressible, lanterns. These range from traditional lanterns to smaller blocks such as the BioLite SunLight.

String lights: An innovative product, solar-powered string light are similar to a string Christmas lights. These lights allow you to spread the light around your campsite.

USB rechargeable: Solar lanterns were initially 100% solar-powered when they appeared on the market. Nowadays, lanterns can be charged via either solar panels or USB ports. Many solar lanterns you’ll find are USB-rechargeable and solar-powered. These lanterns are available in a variety of configurations, including string, fixed, and compressible.

We are ready to treat our value-lovers with a little something. The JMADENQ is a traditional camping lantern design. It is made from ABS plastic housing and feels stronger than it looks.

The camping lantern comes with two sets stainless steel handles: one on the top and one on the sides. The first handle can be used to hang the lantern on a tree branch and the second one allows you use the lantern as a flashlight.

Simply collapse the lantern, turn it on and point at the base to control the beacon. The only button that will turn on or off the solar-powered camping lantern is located in the middle.

Technically, this is cheating because the camping lantern does not have a built-in solar panel. You can still use any compatible solar panel for the rechargeable 5200mAh battery.

Alternativly, you could use the crank to keep your light on. This last one is only for emergency situations. If you don’t, you will have to manage the entire trip.

Two warm, 3W LED bulbs provide the entire light source. The battery is large enough to power the lights for 2.5 hours at high brightness. The yellow knob can be used to adjust the brightness and extend the battery’s life by up to 180 hours.

The Lighthouse camping lantern is a versatile tool. It acts as a portable power bank. This ensures that you won’t run out of power on your next camping trip.

  • It serves as a power bank
  • Multiple charging options
  • LED lights turn on/off independently

MPOWERD Luci Outdoor 2.0 Pro

The original collapsible sun lantern, the Luci, was the first. We still love it. Our top pick was the MPOWERD Luci Pro Outdoor 2.

This light is a great choice for those looking for great features, excellent light quality, fast-charging solar panels, and decent mobile charging capabilities. The Luci Pro lantern was brightest at 150 lumens. We found that we used the lower settings more often in the tent, however. The warm white LEDs create a pleasant, diffused light that gives off a great atmosphere.

Its solar panel was also very fast charging. The solar panel could charge up fast enough to allow it to run for just a few minutes with ambient light or indirect sunlight indoors. We loved the fact that it can be unsnapped, which allows for easy hanging.

Although the mobile charging capabilities of the Luci Pro aren’t as impressive as a dedicated solar charger or battery pack, they still managed to impress us. The Luci Pro provided a 34% increase in phone battery life when fully charged. It took 32 minutes and 1 hour to completely drain the battery. Although it may not sound impressive, this is twice the power of the Suaoki mobile charging lantern. The Luci Pro can charge a phone even if it is completely empty.

Mobile charging can be finicky and we had trouble getting it to register on the phone a few times when it was charging under the sun. It was probably not drawing enough power from the early-winter sun. Overall, we were very impressed by this light and are excited about its mobile charging. We would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a durable, high-quality, solar lantern.

MPOWERD Luci Outdoor 2.0 Pro – Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Extremely portable
  • Decent autonomy
  • Affordable
  • Water-resistant
  • Sturdy frame
  • Rechargeable lantern with Pro model
Cons
  • Delicate straps
  • Won’t illuminate for large areas
  • No USB charging port

Although the LuminAID PackLite Nova USB had many positive qualities, it was not able to make our top five.

It is similar to the MPOWERD Luci lanterns and has a battery indicator and an adjustable strap for easy hanging. It is well-built and durable. The snaps on the adjustable strap are much more user-friendly than Luci’s straps.

We weren’t impressed by the solar panel. It took it over an hour to generate enough power to turn on in direct sunlight. It did stay on for a decent amount of time once it had enough power. It was able to charge slowly, but it had a longer runtime than many other solar lanterns. This lantern emits a bright white fluorescent light that is reminiscent of those flickering office lights we like to escape from when backpacking. It provided the worst illumination for our campsites and tents.

The LuminAID PackLite camping lantern is solid and well-constructed, if you aren’t bothered by the bright white LEDs. The three winners of the award give you more bang for your bucks and make it much easier to light up your campsite.

LuminAID Solar Inflatable Lanterns – Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Compact build
  • Two charging options
  • Five lighting options
  • Recyclable
  • Waterproof and floatable
  • Easy to use
  • Holds charge for a long time
  • Two-year storage life
Cons
  • Long charging speed when charged by the sun
  • Can’t sit evenly on a table

    SUAOKI Led Camping Lanterns

We wanted to include a budget option in our test. With mostly positive online reviews, the Suaoki LED Camping Lantern seemed like a good choice.

This lantern was unfortunately the worst quality and performed poorly. Cheap materials began to show signs of wear almost immediately. Plastic crinkled and started to tear after being exposed to the sun for a few seconds. The solar panel worked intermittently. It was able to charge the lantern for about half an hour in sunlight, and it worked well during our tests.

Another instance was that the Suaoki sat outside in direct sunlight for more than three hours, but did not have enough power to turn it on. Its overall runtimes are good, but it quickly lost its brightness. Its runtime was so short that it would be difficult to use for close-up tasks such as reading or cooking, let alone setting up camp.

Although the lantern has mobile charging capabilities it only gave our phone an 11% boost before it was fully charged. The phone could not be charged using solar power alone. It was quite cool that the light from the collapsed lamp was turned into a flashlight beam.

These lanterns, along with many others, litter Amazon and are cheaply available. Even though the Suaoki is a very affordable lantern, we believe anyone who is interested in solar lanterns should spend a little more for the Goal Zero Crush Light and the MPOWERD Luci Outdoor 2.0.

We don’t recommend this light because of its fragile build and poor performance. There are better options available in the same price range.

The Goal Zero Crush Light weighed only 3.2 oz and was our favorite solar lantern overall.

There were many positives to this lantern. The main selling point for us was its light weight and compactness. Its warm yellow-orange color blends right in with the campfire. It never feels out of place or out of place around the campsite, unlike the bright white LED lights.

We found this light to be the most helpful, as it was warm and cozy. It was an innovative idea to use the candle-light mode which flickers and dims light randomly to simulate a candle. However, it’s not convincing. After playing with the setting for a few minutes, we realized that there was no reason to use it. It doesn’t diminish the other amazing properties of the light, so we are indifferent.

The Goal Zero Crush Light ran for a shorter time than other lights, but it still had a lot of power left after it was turned off. After the lights went out, they were dead, completely drained, and could not be turned back on until they were recharged. We could turn Goal Zero back on after it had shut off at high power. It would usually last another hour on low power.

It’s important to be able to see that the Crush Light won’t abruptly turn off, leaving you in complete darkness. The solar panel on the Crush Light worked exceptionally well considering it was the smallest of the lanterns we tested. In direct sunlight, the Crush Light was able to charge up quickly. This light had only a few downsides. It could be hard to crush the material, so it might take some effort to get all the folds into place.

It also didn’t have any indicator of its battery state, so you would be guessing. The USB port does have a light that blinks red when the USB port is charging. It was also the only lantern that didn’t have a cover or bottom. The LEDs might be a bit binding if the lantern is hanging above your head. This light was recommended for its ambiance, which is why we love it.

This, combined with the fact it was the lightest, most compact, and performed well in our tests, makes it a great choice for backpackers and anyone else looking for a simple, portable solar lantern to light up your backcountry nights.

Goal Zero Crush Light Solar Powered Lantern – Pros & Cons

    Pros
    • Multiple light colors
    • USB and solar charging options
    • It has an IPX4 water resistance rating
    • Lightweight
    Cons
    • It takes too long to charge the battery using the solar panel
    • Low lumen output

    BioLite Sunlight Solar Powered Lantern

We tested the BioLite SunLight, which was the only non-collapsible sun lantern. It had many of our favourite features.

It was amazing in color and ambience. The dimmable white light and the option to select from different lighting options were a great feature. When we were at camp after a great meal, the “party mode” was fun. It slowly cycles through various colors of light.

It is extremely lightweight and compact and it lasted 13 hours and 10 seconds in our runtime testing. It’s a portable, rechargeable USB camping lantern that we loved. Its solar panel was not the strongest in our test and, since this review is about solar camping lanterns it weighs quite a lot. Three hours of full sun took the BioLite three hours to reach reserve mode. This mode is low-power and limits the BioLite’s functionality to a dim white light.

Refer to the following: Both Luci lights and Goal Zero lights turned on within minutes, and often within seconds of being in direct sunlight. It didn’t have enough power even after spending more than five hours in direct sunlight. It turned on immediately after being plugged into a USB charger and continued to work for more than an hour. It is hard to believe that a solar panel could not generate enough power in just a few seconds by charging it on a wall.

We aren’t sure if there was a glitch in the lemon that required a surge of USB power to exit reserve mode or if it is simply extremely inefficient. We were disappointed, regardless of the reason. This light is still an option if you intend to keep it charged via USB, but use the solar panel to boost it every so often. It was a good product. However, we would not recommend it if it didn’t charge with sunlight.

How to choose the best solar camping lantern for your needs

    Solar Lantern
How to choose the best solar camping lantern for your needs

    Solar Charging Time

A wall charger can charge most lights in a matter of hours. It’s different under the sun. You need to be aware of how long it takes to recharge your solar lantern if you intend to use it primarily off-grid.

Manufacturers will tell you how long it takes for the light to fully charge in sunlight. But that’s not the entire story.

Some lights take longer to reach full capacity but can be charged up in less than an hour to last through the evening. Others lights can take hours to charge enough to turn on.

    Light Quality

We tested a variety of lights, from soft and warm to harsh and cold. This was a major factor in how much we liked these lights, despite all other features.
Consider your preference for light quality (warm, cold, diffused or sharp), and ensure that the light you receive is suitable.

    Lumens

Lumens refer to the amount of light that a lantern emits at its source. We tested lights ranging from 60 to 150 lumens.
60 lumens was sufficient for us to cook, hang out, and do other tasks around camp. Although it is nice to have more brightness, it is not essential.

    Mobile Charging Capabilities

Solar lanterns can also be used to charge your phone’s battery. Although this is a great feature, their charging power is limited.
These are great for occasional top-ups, but not enough to last for heavy usage.

    Emergencies

In times of emergency and crisis, it is essential to have reliable lightning sources. It is not a good idea to be stuck in a blackout with no lighting for your family.
A great option is to use solar-powered lamps as a lantern.

    • Night Lightning Purposes – Being able to light your environment at night is crucial to survival in emergencies
    • Emergency Backup – In the event of extreme weather, you will have an emergency backup
    • A Safer Alternative – Candle lanterns or camping lanterns are safer than open-flame candles or kerosene lamps.
