I was able to lighten a 35-foot long sidewalk using the Otdair solar flood lamps. The lights were placed on the wall near me and directed in the right direction. Although 550 lumens may not be very bright, the light was enough to make it easy to see the path I was on. To direct the light, I could adjust the heads to the upward or downward position.

These are motion-detection-only lights, making them well suited for both security and illuminating nighttime areas for safety purposes. Each light was on when I was within 25 feet of it. They stayed on for approximately 30 seconds after I left the area.

They are easy to install with screws and have an IP65 rating. This means they were not damaged during the snow and sleet storms.

Both lights lit up when tested in the morning just before dawn.

The TBI Security Solar Light has 216 LEDs on the front panel and two adjustable side panels. It offers a wide range of illumination. I was able to rotate and tilt the three light heads to change the direction of the lights so that they illuminated at a 180-degree angle.

Although the manufacturer claims that the panels can be adjusted to 355 degrees by rotating and tilting its three light heads, the maximum degree of directional illumination is only possible if the light is mounted on a corner of a building. The light will be blocked by the building if it is not installed on the corner of a building.

The light’s motion sensor impressed me. It picked up my movements from 38 feet away. It is powered by a 2,200 mAh lithium-ion cell and offers 2,200 lumens. Although it is not a bright light, it can be used to see up to 40 feet away.

TBI lights are IP65 rated to protect from dust and resist occasional rain, though it was not affected by the snow or sleet storm. It performed just as well as before the storm.

The TBI flood light was activated by motion and remained on for approximately 30 seconds even after I moved beyond the sensor’s range. It stayed on as long as I kept moving within the range of the sensor. The only problem was that the beams could be seen in dark areas if the sidelights were moved outwards more than 45 degrees.

It wasn’t an issue for me as I placed the main light in the middle of the patio and each sidelight toward the two side gates. This could be a problem for those who want a strong field of illumination.

A flood light doesn’t cost much. When the NACINIC LED solar floodlight was set to motion detection mode, it turned on at 15 feet from my sensor. It also worked in dusk to dawn mode, with full intensity. The dimmable intensity light turns on when the sensor detects motion and dims after 20 seconds to low intensity.

The Nacinic light only lasted 4 hours in full intensity, dusk to dawn mode. This was due to the rapid depletion of the rechargeable battery. The battery lasted the entire night in the low-intensity motion-detection mode, which I prefer.

Tin Sum Solar Energy flood lights are advertised at 24,000 lumens. However, compared to other lights I tested it is closer to 4,500 lumens. It’s still a great light, which turns on automatically when the sun goes down and remains on until the battery runs out. Although it didn’t stay on until sunrise for me, it did last 6 hours after receiving a full charge.

The floodlight was installed on a tree that overlooked my dogs’ play area entrance. I could see the gate clearly from the window of my house, which is about 150 feet away. Before the Tin Sum Solar Energy floodlight, I was required to have a flashlight with me when I took the dogs outside and brought them back inside.

The best way to use the light (for me) was to switch it on/off via the remote control. It would be switched on when I was going to the play area, and it would remain on while my dogs were playing in the yard. It would be switched back on when we returned indoors. To use the remote, I needed to be within 20 feet of it. It is IP67 rated and survived the snow and sleet storms without any issues.

The light was mounted under an eave in a garage on the east and the solar panel was installed on the south side via a 9-foot cord. The long cord let me place the light wherever I wanted it to be, not just on the sunny side.

The IPX4 rating on this light indicates that it can withstand a splash of water but not suffer damage. The floodlight can withstand some rain or snow, but I placed it under the eave to ensure extra protection.

After sunset, I walked by the light and it turned on. While I was walking nearby, it stayed on for about 30 seconds before turning off. It provided 30 feet of bright white light and clear light, although it did not have the same illumination range as other lights. During the time I was testing solar lights, we had a snow/sleet storm and the Westinghouse light was completely covered with ice for several days. It still worked well after the ice had melted.

The 800 lumens of bright, warm light each of the small URPOWER solar floodlights emits is 800 lumens. They can be placed in the same area as a patio or walkway to provide ample illumination.

Each of the four URPOWER light fixtures was installed on trees next to a small playground. The lights lit up as soon as I walked within 20 feet of them. They remained on for as long as I was moving around the area and eventually turned off after 30 minutes. Because the beams from each light are approximately 100 degrees wide, I found the best illumination by placing them close together (about 15 feet apart).

Although the URPOWER lights aren’t equipped with many bells or whistles, they are well-made and very bright for their small size. They collectively emit 3,200 lumens when all four lights are turned on. They were fine after the snowstorm and sleet storm and lit up brightly the morning before dawn.

The dusk-to-dawn light was one of my favorites because it did not shine light into my eyes, even though it was installed above a shed door. The light output is 500 lumens, which is enough to illuminate a 25-foot area in a semicircle. Frosted light covers soften the light, making it more like a white glow rather than a bright beam. It can be installed over garage doors or side-entry doors or on a wall or tall fence that overlooks a path.

There are two modes for the leading light: it can either turn on at night and then stay on or it can light up when it senses motion. It worked the best because it was set to motion detection.

How many solar panels are needed to produce 5000 watts of power?

It may seem obvious to you, but it is not as easy as it seems. If we were to use 300-watt solar panels then, in theory, would divide the power needed by 300, which would give 16.6 or 17 panels, if you round up.

Unfortunately, it’s not like that in the real world

Although solar panels are rated at 300 Watts, this is not the maximum you can expect from them. Instead, the Standard Test Conditions (STC) specify a level of 1000 W per square meter.

Except for the difference in irradiance all solar systems experience losses of around 23%. To account for this loss, you will need to multiply your solar panel-rated powers. This is equivalent to multiplying total power by 1.44.

  • 5000 watts x 1.44 = 7000 watts
  • Number of solar panels required = 23 panels each rating at 300 watts

Roof characteristics

The orientation (‘azimuth’) and pitch (‘tilt’) of your roof will determine the orientation and angle of your solar panels. Both factors, especially direction, can have a considerable impact on solar energy production. 

A solar array facing east or west will produce approximately 15% less output than one facing south. If you can only install on an east or west-facing roof, you’ll have to increase the size of the solar system to account for that.

Any solar power system that has backup batteries should have the Solar Charge Controller to ensure that the batteries are not charging too much and also to stop the batteries from returning their charge back to solar panels during periods of low sunlight (i.e. the nighttime).

Because a solar controller performs its job in conjunction with the array of solar panels and storage battery, it follows that the selection and size are determined by the components.

Current and voltage are the two variables used to determine the size of solar charge controllers. The solar controller should be able to handle the highest power output from solar panels and delivering the right DC charge current and voltage to batteries.

For systems operating continuously, that is the standard industry 1.2 (20 percent extra) de-rating rate is set to protect the controller from being damaged by excessive solar panel power or current.

Example:

12-volt solar panels with a capacity of 100 W with the following electrical characteristics:
